SBR is a low cost, high volume rubber that is available in various ratios
of these two monomers. SBR copolymers with a high styrene and low
butadiene content can be compounded into high tensile strength, high
modulus, high hardness materials without the use of large amounts of
fillers. Because of the good abrasion resistance and leather-like
properties of these compounds, they are used in the manufacture of shoe
soling and floor tile. On the other hand, highbutadiene, low-styrene
copolymers offer good flexibility at low temperatures.
Most SBR
copolymers are produced in a butadiene/styrene ratio of 77 to 23. In
the reinforced formulations, these rubbers have high tensile strength
and elongation. They can also be compounded to have good abrasion and
tear resistance and low compression set. Special compounding is
required for good weatherability.
