Oil Seals are useful in sealing rotary elements such as shafts or bores. They are used in hydraulic pumps, sealing struts and other gas-filled cylinders, axle seals for power steering mechanisms, and valve stem seals.
A special feature of the oil seal is the garter spring, which helps to reduce the effects of lip wear on the elastomer. Construction involves a spring-taught main lip in direct contact with the shaft. For durability, oil seal elastomers generally have a higher durometer (70 - 90 Shore A).
