Fluorocarbon (FKM)

FKM is produced as either a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene (A family), a terpolymer of tetrafluoroethylene, vinylidene fluoride, and hexafluoropropylene (B family) or a tetrapolymer composed of tetrafluoroethylene, vinylidene fluoride, a cure site monomer, and either hexafluoropropylene or perfluoromethylvinyl ether (F family).

These moderately priced elastomers exhibit excellent resistance to heat, ozone, oils, many chemicals, and some solvents. Higher levels of chemical resistance or enhanced low temperature properties are achieved through the selection of the proper polymer family.

Under the brand names Viton®, Viton® ETP, and Viton® Extreme DuPont produces this high-performence FKM elastomer as an ETP polymer. Viton Extreme is produced as a tetrapolymer of ethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, perfluoromethylvinyl ether and a cure site monomer to offer additional chemical resistance, approaching that of a Perfluoroelastomer.
