Ethylene propylene based rubbers have high tensile strength and
elongation, and excellent resistance to oxygen and ozone when properly reinforced. EPR and EPDM, two such polymers,
have the potential of good flexing characteristics, low compression
set, good heat resistance, and good electrical properties, in addition to high-availability and low-cost.
Ethylene propylene is produced in two types: a fully saturated copolymer of ethylene and propylene (EPR) and an unsaturated version of ethylene and propylene plus a nonconjugated diene as a third monomer (EPDM). Being unsaturated, the terpolymer is capable of sulfur vulcanization. The copolymer must be, and the terpolymer may be, cured with peroxides to improve performance.
Both EPR and EPDM are compatible with low cost extender oils in large amounts, with little sacrifice in properties of the vulcanizate. Both types also offer outstanding weathering characteristics.
