AEM, also known as Vamac® (DuPont), consists primarily of methyl acrylate copolymerized with ethylene and a third monomer containing carboxylic acid.
Excellent ozone, weathering, sunlight and oxidation resistance result from this elastomer's saturated ethylene chain. In applications demanding tear, abrasion, impact and flexing resistance, ethylene acrylic is more durable than polyacrylate. However, the mechanical properties of both compounds are sacrificed as the plasticizer content increases.
Ethylene acrylic rubbers also posses excellent dryheat resistance up to 350°F and flexibility as low as -40°F with a brittle point of -65°F. With adequate resistance to petroleum oils, and good resistance to transmission fluids, power steering fluids, engine coolants, dilute acids, alkalis, and permeability, ethylene acrylic is a popular selection for automotive hose, transmission, power steering and vibration mount applications.
