ACM elastomers are based on ethyl or butyl acrylate, or a combination of the two monomers with other comonomers. These monomers usually contain chlorine but they can be epoxy compounds or acid or amide groups. Tensile strength and elongation of these medium priced rubbers are moderate, but only in the reinforced state.
The polymers based on ethyl acrylate are characterized by excellent heat and oil resistance and a low temperature flexibility of -14°F. Low temperature flexibility of the butyl acrylate copolymers extends to -40°F, but heat resistance and oil resistance are sacrificed. Polyacrylate rubbers are superior to nitrile rubbers in resistance to deterioration by high-aniline point oils, extreme pressure lubricants and transmission fluids. Their resistance to ozone, sunlight and weathering conditions is outstanding. Post curing is necessary to develop maximum physical properties.
